Mount Aspiring College has a dedicated group of parents and staff in the board room. Dr Ian Hall is the Board Chair, and Nicola Jacobsen is now on the board in the role of Principal.
Bridget Legnavsky is now the Deputy Chair and Ben Taylor is now the Chair Finance. Welcomed onboard is Jo Cooper as the new Board Secretary.

I am pleased to have accepted an invitation from the Board of Trustees to act as the Board’s Chair for the next few critical months as we make further progress on addressing the significant issues that face the school community.
I will be working closely with the Limited Statutory Manager, Madeleine Hawkesby, to ensure that the Board functions as a cohesive and effective governing body, acting in the best interests of all. My focus is very much on implementing the actions that have been agreed to ensure that all students of the College will experience a high-quality education that will fit them for life beyond school.
We all know that the school faces a number of challenges, but we can build from a strong platform of student success and community support. I’m confident that, with goodwill and with the strong involvement of all in the school community, we can indeed secure a bright future for the school and its students.
I’ve been meeting this week with Dean Sheppard, our Acting Principal. Dean has a clear understanding of his key leadership role and the Board is expecting the clear commitment of all staff to the action plans that are being finalised. I thank the staff for the fine work that has been done so far this year in the face of some daunting challenges.
Madeleine, Dean, and I will continue to keep you well-informed through the School’s regular newsletter. Please know that all members of the Board of Trustees are fully committed to the ongoing development of the school. The Board meets next at 6.00pm on 25 August. As you are probably aware, we have undergone a number of changes within the Board of Trustees in recent months. As a board we strive to ensure effective and inclusive governance of the school - as well as seeking to empower the Principal and Senior Leadership Team.
At Tuesday night’s meeting the board agreed to request that the Ministry of Education appoint an independent Limited Statutory Manager (LSM) to work alongside us.
We hope the LSM appointment will mean the Parents of MAC group feel their perspectives will be fully considered and that any necessary changes will be actioned by the school. The board believes the appointment will enable this to happen quickly and minimise the ongoing impact on the students, staff and school.
We believe the appointment is a positive step, and look forward to turning our full attention to other key areas such as monitoring student achievement, recruiting a new principal and supporting our staff and students after what has been a challenging few months for our community.
The ministry will now work through a process to appoint an independent LSM, which we understand may be in place by the end of next week. We will update you further once this has been finalised.

The Board of Trustees would like to update you about several important aspects of our school. We realise there are many challenges facing our community at this time and so wanted to provide reassurance about the school so that this is not weighing on your mind.
Firstly we look forward to welcoming back our students next week. The Principal and staff will be in touch with more information about the arrangements for a return to school. I can assure you that the Board and school management have put a lot of thought into how we can assure the health of everyone in our school once it restarts on 18th May. We would like to thank all of our families for their efforts around supporting teaching and learning programmes from home. We know there has been a range of experiences for our students during this time with some finding it difficult while others have enjoyed their time at home. We hope that the return to school will be smooth and positive for your son/daughter.
We would also like to sincerely thank all of our staff for embracing the required changes and ensuring that there has not been too much disruption to student learning and achievement during this time. Our school is committed to ensuring that everything possible will be done to ensure that these weeks do not negatively impact on the results of students, particularly those sitting NCEA. Heads of Learning Areas will be carefully working through where students are at and putting in place anything needed to address any gaps in knowledge and set students up for success for assessments and end of-year examinations.Continued - Click here for the full statement
It is with regret that we acknowledge the resignation of Glenn Peat from the Board of Trustees. In the time he was with us Glenn helped drive positive change, and we had the utmost confidence in his abilities. As a Board we are committed to seeing through the initiatives on our work agenda and we are sorry to see Glenn go. We thank him for his contribution to the school and wish him all the best.
Moving forward, we now have a casual vacancy on the board which we will open up to the community via an election. The position will initially be for the remainder of Glenn Peat’s term which was due to finish in December 2020.
In the interim, Ed Nepia is the Board of Trustees Acting Chair.
On behalf of the MAC Board of Trustees, I would like to extend our sincere thanks for all your efforts and commitment to provide the best possible education for our students through these uniquely challenging times. Your willingness and flexibility to adapt your teaching practice at short notice has been remarkable and is greatly appreciated, thank you all again.
You will be aware that the board of trustees has recently confirmed the resignation of parent representative and Board Chair, Glenn Peat. The board is aware that members of our school community believe the board has not been transparent around the timing of the notification of his resignation. I would like to reassure you that the board only received a final confirmation of his resignation late afternoon on Friday 1st of May 2020 which was then relayed to the wider community yesterday.
It is with regret that I also acknowledge the resignation of our board member Tracey Gibson. Tracey has served on the Mount Aspiring College board as a parent representative since 2013 and before that she had served on the board of Wanaka Primary School.
Tracey has made a massive contribution to the many successes the college has enjoyed over the last seven and a half years at a board level, her membership of the financial committee and notably through her dedication to her beloved sport of netball.
I thank Tracey for her outstanding contribution and service to the college over many years and wish her all the very best with her future plans. As you will appreciate the board is having to reorient following these resignations. The board is currently engaged with NZSTA to help guide us through the process of electing new parent representatives and to assist us in our efforts to improve the boards performance.
Moving forward, we now have two casual vacancies for parent representatives available within the board - and we will open this up to the community via an election in due course. We will also be looking to select someone from within the community to co-opt in as a new chair for the remainder of Glenn’s term (which ends December).
In the interim, I have stepped into the role of Board Chair. The college faces ongoing challenges with both the impacts of COVID-19 in the delivery of our curriculum, and the wider social and economic impacts to our community. The board recognises that there is much to be done in order to meet our shared goal of providing the best possible educational outcomes for our students and to make Mount Aspiring College the very best it can be.
